Separation of finest aerosol and fume particles generated by metal
  cutting processes

Waste gas pre-cleaned in a HANDTE Type OE-D mechanical oil and emulsion separator is conveyed to the electrostatic separator.

This system involves small droplets (diameter < 2 µm) flowing through a nozzle plate where the droplets are charged by a corona discharging device. Almost all of these particles move to an electrically grounded surface collector electrode. Intensive charging of the particles ensures a permanent separation of finest aerosol and fume particles with a diameter of 0.1 - 0.2 µm.

The drop in pressure is minimal, energy consumption is very low and there is no necessity for a cost-intensive secondary storage filter system.Apart from successful examinations and tests carried out in the laboratories of FZK, initial field tests have been conducted in connection with metal cutting at the premises of a well-known car manufacturer.

The primary objective was to check lab results and gain experience with regard to performance and maintenance intervals during continuous operation. The results are quite positive and bode well for further activities. Additional field tests are in preparation.
